The City of Baker welcomes you! Baker is located in the northern portion of East Baton Rouge Parish in Louisiana. Baker is a friendly town‑‑perfect for raising a family or retiring. We are a progressive city that promotes harmony, invigorating activity and many opportunities to contribute to excellence through neighborhood involvement.

 

The City of Baker is comprised mostly of densely‑populated subdivisions and commercial properties, but also contains lowlands, woodlands and farmland. There are approximately 13,835 residents, 198 businesses and five industrial operations within the city limits. The City is comprised of 8.5 square miles and there are 225 miles of roadway within the city limits.

 

Baker can provide for almost every personal need, and the Mayor and Council are here to serve you.  We have many neighborhood parks and BREC's Greenwood Park facility has recently been renovated and now has revamped eighteen-hold golf course; two lakes for canoeing, kayaking and fishing; walking and bicycling trails, disc golf; two dog parks, a playground and a splash pad; a multipurpose theater and an amphitheater.  Next to Greenwood Park is a First Tee nine-hole golf course with a driving range and putting and chipping practice greens.

 

BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo is adjacent to our city and boasts the most prolific rare wild animals in the nation.

 

There is easy access to the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport it is located only five miles from Baker.

 

Baker is a natural hub for various businesses. The City is in close proximity to twenty‑five industrial plants employing thousands of workers. ExxonMobil, one of our community partners, has several plants nearby.

 

Baker was established in May 3, 1888 and was proclaimed a village on December 27, 1944.  Baker became a town on September 16, 1948 and on August 21, 1962, Baker became a city with a population of 5,814.  Baker hosts a variety of historical buildings and places, including, the Baker Heritage Museum, Leland College, the Chamber of Commerce Building, that used to be a one-room school house, and a historic school auditorium designed by famous architect, A. Hays Town.

 

The Baker Walmart's Murphy Oil gas station consistently offers the lowest fuel prices in the northern portion of East Baton Rouge Parish.

 

The Baker Fire Department holds a class 2 rating the second highest rating available.   Holding a class 2 rating means residents pay the least possible amount on homeowners insurance.

 

We have excellent bus service coverage and are currently adding new routes throughout the city.

 

Every year in September, we have the Baker Buffalo Festival, a child-friendly festival that hosts many events, including live bands; amusement rides; a beauty pageant, talent show; car show; golf tournament; boxing competition; spelling bee; art contest, 5k run/walk and a 1 mile special needs and children's run/walk; a magician; ExxonMobil chemistry demonstrations and laptop give-aways; safety demonstrations, child car seat checks; free horse rides; and old-fashioned children's games.

 

We have more churches per capita than any other city in Louisiana.

 

We have five schools in the City of Baker School System two neighborhood elementary schools, a magnate elementary school, an intermediate school and a high school.  Baker High School has award-winning marching and concert bands and ladies basketball team.  This year a brand new football stadium and state-of-the-art track were completed.
